Cycling

The Richmond Cycling Corps offers many different programs to support the middle and high school students of Richmond's East End. With our full inventory of bikes, youth are able to participate in programming for zero cost to families as we strive to fill the gap of out-of-school time programs for children in often underserved communities.

Legacy Cycling —  Our Legacy Cycling program encompasses our most intensive time with youth. We typically have around 10 individuals that are being engaged 5-7 times per week.

Mountain Bikes: Our Legacy race team travels across the state of Virginia, competing both in the NICA and VAHS mountain bike leagues. In 2021 they competed in 63 competitive races. While race days are only a few days out of the year, we use them as a destination point and something to both look forward to but also to train for and prepare for. It is often a time people can get out of Richmond and see something new. Or potentially camp outside for the first time in their lives.

Road Bikes: Building up endurance and accomplishing targeted goals of 25/50/75/100 miles. The “delayed gratification” of riding the Capital Trail from Richmond to Jamestown allows our youth to see how they can set a goal, build up the capacity for success, and achieve their goals. And hopefully, they can see that if they can get better at cycling, they can get better at anything they put their mind to.

Operational Cycling — We share the beauty and freedom of cycling as a gateway to physical activity, relationship building, and empowerment.

Alumni Cycling: Our time with our youth does not stop when they graduate high school or age out of our Legacy Cycling program. We continue to provide the support and access to continue a life with cycling.

Group or Class Cycling: We regularly run classes for Anna Julia Cooper as we ride with their middle school students. More partnerships coming up in 2022. If you are interested to learn more send us a note info@richmondcyclingcorps.org

Conversational Cycling: Not everyone wants to or needs to race. We aim to share the benefits of cycling to youth that otherwise might not have access to green spaces or physical activity.

Outreach

The majority of our work happens off of the bike. If there is someone in the community that could use our assistance we aim to be part of their lives. From daily support, tutoring, navigating school and college, gaining employment, finding housing, or assisting in obtaining a driver's license.
